Dive Into the Stacks: DIY Home Repair @ Your Library

Your Abilene Public Library houses a great collection of resources across a myriad of topics.  We invite you to Dive Into the Stacks to discover some great areas you're more than welcome to make use of.

If you're a homeowner, you know that things have a tendency to break.  Sometimes calling in a plumber, electrician, or other professional may be a costly expense...especially for something that ends up being an easy fix.  If that sounds like you, your library can help with offering a vast number of resources on general home repair.

If you're looking for a comprehensive guide that covers just about anything and everything that can go wrong with your home, the following resources offer a great place to start.

The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair
Publisher: Black & Decker Corp.
Copies Owned: 3 regular print
Call Number: 643.7 COM
Summary: This great guide will cover just about any household repair you might need including instructions for over 350 projects with over 2,000 photos.  Touted as being "the only home repair resource you need to do it yourself," you'll find a great number of repair instructions listed under major categories.  From plumbing and writing to heating and air conditioning, this guide will go over the tools you'll need, safety precautions to take, and photos for each of the steps covered.  It really can't get much better than that.

Ultimate Guide: Home Repair and Improvement
Publisher: Creative Homeowner Press
Copies Owned: 3 regular print
Call Number: 643.7 ULT
Summary: Much like the previous guide, this resource will provide you with money-saving projects, tips and ways on going green, and all combined with over 3,300 photos and illustrations to assist you each step of the way.  Divided into a number of categories, even more broad than the first resource, you'll find information on everything from home security features, masonry, windows and doors, and more.  Again, if looking for a comprehensive guide, this is another great resource to get your hands on.

Knack Home Repair & Maintenance
Author: Terry Meany
Copies Owned: 3 regular print
Call Number: 643.7 MEA
Summary: A lighter option on home repair is this title providing you with a quick reference guide towards understanding what's gone wrong in your home.  Also providing step-by-step instructions and photos/illustrations, this guide will highlight the most common problems homeowners may experience from child-proofing to fixing a leak.  Although this resource isn't as thorough as the first two mentioned in this article, it will provide you with a streamlined guide for quick access.

These guides are a great starting off point for learning the basics about home repair from start to finish.  If you think you have that do-it-yourselfer gene, you might want to give them a shot before calling the pros for some help...although please note, you cannot hold your library responsible for any damage you may inflict upon your home.  That just wouldn't be fair now would it?  So look out for these at your Abilene Public Library and if you need any additional assistance, feel free to Contact Me (Tremain Jackson) and I'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions.
